The textile industry housed in the Dominican Republic's industrial free trade zones got a break yesterday with the announcement that they will have 100,000 meters more of cloth to export. The cloth, originating in Mexico and Canada, is part of the "accumulation of origin" which consists in the use of cloth and threads coming from the US, Canada, Mexico or Central America. According to Listin Diario, there is also the possibility of duplicating the "accumulation of origin" in the coming years. Textile manufacturing is very important in the Dominican Republic, with 46% of the trade surplus for the years 1999-2004 coming from this sector. There are 189,000 jobs in the free zones, which in 2004 exported goods valued at over US$4.4 billion.
