A spokesperson for Transparency International, Marta Erquicia who was in the Dominican Republic to participate in the OAS General Assembly, told the press yesterday that the best laws are useless if there is not political will to fight corruption. She urged governments move from talk to action. "What we want is that they [governments] move on from talking among colleagues to acting, to take concrete steps to eradicate the problem," she state when interviewed by the press at the headquarters of the Participacion Ciudadana, civic society group. She said that information technologies and communication exist to facilitate accountability, transparency in government purchasing and political campaign financing.

Javier Cabreja, of Participacion Ciudadana, urged that government departments take actions to facilitate the implementation of the freedom of information act. He also urged that government offices begin to hold procurement tenders. He said there can be no excuses for this because there are already some departments that are doing so, such as the Attorney General's Office that could serve as model.
