The French-based Alstom Group will build 19 sets of cars for the Santo Domingo Metro System. The total cost will be EUR 92.5 (US$119 million). Each of the sets will contain five units, and they will start to arrive in 2008. Alstom, which is reported to produce 20% of the world's electricity, has made an impressive recovery over the past decade, obtaining an 8% increase in orders, including the Dominican Metro. Alstom will build the subway cars in three different locations: the passenger cars in Barcelona; the engines and traction systems in Charleroi, Belgium; and they will construct the wheel carriages for the cars in Creusat, France. The cars are the same type that is currently employed in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Barcelona and Santiago de Chile.
