ABC News reported the incredible story of a Dominican who despite maintaining illegal residence status made his way through the top echelons of the US education system to be honored with being his graduating class salutatorian. Dan (el Padilla) Peralta entered the US on a tourist visa at the age of four and his genius and scholarly qualities earned him a scholarship to study at a prestigious prep school and then into Princeton. But when Padilla was offered a scholarship for graduate studies at Oxford University in England, the truth leaked out. If he were to accept that scholarship, he would not be allowed to return to the US for at least a decade. He now has to reconsider this opportunity because there are matters on his personal agenda, such as seeing his brother graduate.


Padilla's attorney has requested a waiver, but immigration authorities say it would set a precedent. "We can't make exception for people who break the law simply because they happen to be geniuses," said Ira Mehlman of the Federation for American Immigration Reform. For the full story, go to:
