Armed Forces Minister Admiral Sigfrido Pared Perez doesn't deny that members of the armed forces might commit criminal offenses, but he insists that when they do occur, the individual is discharged immediately. The admiral offered proof to Diario Libre reporters by showing how, over the past 18 months, just over a thousand members of the armed forces had been either discharged or demoted for criminal activity or what he called "dubious behavior". The admiral reported that there are special units within the forces that are constantly reviewing their members and monitoring their activities. On payday, many of the members of the armed forces are submitted to interrogations. He insisted that the work of keeping the forces clean is a never-ending task. The armed forces have not, however, revealed the names of the helicopter pilots who were discharged after testing positive for drugs. The admiral was interviewed at the old Herrera airport as the property was being turned over to its new owners. The minister's responses were in answer to comments made by Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez, who questioned the fact that so many members of the police and the armed forces were being linked with criminal activities.
