After a very long wait, the land belonging to the Herrera Airport, just to the west of most of Santo Domingo, was finally handed over to the government's creditors. Grand Realty received 150,000 m2 of land valued at RD$97 million and the Corporacion Macao received 66,000 m2 of this highly valued land. Even the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic received 21,000 m2 as the trustee of the assets of collapsed bank BanInter. Addressing the new owners, Airport Authority director Andres Vanderhorst explained that much of the delay in handing over the land was due to the problems associated with getting the new airport in El Higuero ready for traffic. Vanderhorst praised the work done by the government and the armed forces in getting the site cleaned and vacated.
