The Dominican Corporation of State Electric Companies (CDEEE) reported yesterday that the recent increase in blackouts was due to a lack of fuel and to mechanical breakdowns. An energy deficit of 458 megawatts was reported by the CDEEE. A report from the state energy consortium said that AES-Andres went off-line and that meant a loss of 285 MW, but that it expected to receive more fuel (natural gas) tomorrow. The Haina IV generating station went off line due to mechanical problems and the Smith-Enron plant in Puerto Plata was only producing 70 MW due to mechanical issues.

The DR is again suffering from long blackouts that considerably increase the cost of living and producing in the DR because of the running of supplementary power plants. In most cases, the power bills do not go down, despite the long hours of blackouts.
