With a budget estimated at RD$60 million and with the aim of immunizing more than 909,967 people of all ages, the Ministry of Public Health began a national vaccination campaign yesterday. The objective of this strategy is to immunize against eight preventable illnesses, including diphtheria, whooping cough, and tetanus in children over seven years of age. Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez headed the formal launch of the immunization operation yesterday during a ceremony at the Professor Juan Bosch Primary School in the La Puya Sector of Arroyo Hondo. The launch of the campaign comes as part of the "Americas Vaccination Week".
Rojas Gomez said that staff will go from house to house in more than 900 priority areas and that the vaccines will be available at more than 955 fixed sites that the Ministry has around the country. Staff members expect to vaccinate some 623,000 children under three years of age. For his part, the director of the Broad-based Immunization Program, Zacarias Garib, said that the children from the ages of one to three who have not been vaccinated would receive a dose against measles, chickenpox and mumps, while women of childbearing age will get a vaccination against Hepatitis B. Elderly people will also be vaccinated, as well as schoolchildren with chronic illnesses.
