The Ministry of Public Works is spending RD$4 billion on several projects in the east as part of government efforts to develop the region. Most of the money will be spent on roads and bridges as well as a vast program of asphalting the streets of barrios and smaller roads between towns. In San Pedro de Macoris, for example, the Ministry says it is building the bridge over the Soco River, at an estimated cost of RD$600 million. Public Works Minister Victor Diaz Rua told reporters from Listin Diario that the bridge was designed to support the worst climatic and flood conditions. The Ministry also says it is working on the road between the Cruce de Cayacoa and Los Llanos, on the reconstruction of the Ramon Santana Bridge and the bridge over the Magua River near the Consuelo Sugar Mill. He also mentioned other projects in the province of San Pedro de Macoris, such as the construction of sidewalks and gutters in Los Llanos, and the barrios of Japon, Las Filipinas, Las Colinas and Justo Carrion.
