View Full Version : Checks for swine flu

Passengers arriving at Punta Cana airport are being checked for swine flu via a thermal camera.
If they have a fever these passengers could be carrying the virus - at least that's the theory. The equipment for these checks was purchased by the airport over four years ago as part of the programme: 'fighting infectious diseases and disasters'. If they find a passenger with a fever, that person is taken to a special room where doctors then perform a blood test.
The management at Puerto Plata airport says they will also start such checks in the near future, but do not yet have the correct equipment available. Checks at this airport are particularly necessary, according to the management, as many passengers arrive here on holiday from countries such as Mexico and the USA.

Weird. When I arrived at POP on Thursday, a group of chicas in costume grabbed me and made me pose for a photo taken by two guys with what appeared to be advanced looking SLR cameras just as we got off the plane, after the band, but before we reached tourist cards and immigration. I was expecting a hustle to try and get me to buy pics, but no one asked me anything. They where grabbing and taking pics of everyone getting off the flight.

You said they made you take pictures meaning they didn't ask, you were forced. We're they LE or something? Do you know why they were taking the pics?

What type of costumes?

I hope they were little white nurse outfits with fishnet stockings, garters (red, of course), too small tops with the cleavage and navels showing and little white nursey caps. Oh yeah...stethoscopes, too. :corky: Hey...maybe they were undercover CDC and it was an IR camera. Do they still have rectal thermometers?

Same for me. They were "glamour" girls in showgirl-type costumes (leotards, feather headdresses, stilettos). I assumed (and still do) that the pics will be available for sale in the departure lounge on my way home two weeks later. And maybe they will use the best pics for promotional purposes.

What's that got to do with health checks?

It's probably just as you surmise, however, it has be reported that the DR will use thermal imaging cameras at ports of entry to screen those passengers that have a fever to pull aside for additional medical screening to see if they carry the H1N1 virus ( swine flu ).

The funny thing for me is that my normal body temp runs one to two degrees below the average 98.6. So for me, what might appear to be normal is actually a low grade fever.

That is way too ingenious for the DR. Sounds more like a James Bond movie. They are still working on getting toilet paper to flush down the toilet instead of using a bucket.

My flight was full of all-inclusive Brit holiday-makers who were embarrassed as hell to have their pictures taken. I gave the glamor girls a cuddle and grope (Passions style) and got a few laughs and a faint round of applause from those queuing behind me.

I always knew you were a cold fish.

I got that pic taken with the glamour girls when I flew into Punta Cana airport a few years ago.

I'm not sure whether the pics were on sale further down the line, I can't remember.

whoever said that they are still trying to get a toilet to flush instead of using a bucket of water. That was funny but true. ANyways, everyone knows the most accurate way to take your temp is to put the thermometer in your ass.

In the Santo Domingo airport they have the machine sitting there when you head to immigration, and they have someone to operate the machine. The problem is they're not checking anyone!!!!

(anyone remember the Seinfeld episode about the car rental reservation?)

Reminds me of something.

Years ago my cousin and I were returning from Greece. At the airport in Athens we were on line and as usual somebody was walking up and down asking you if anyone other than you had access to your bag and if only you packed it and if there's anything there blahblahblah. My cousin tells the guy "yeah i have a sword" and the guy says "are u serious" and my cousin replies "no i'm joking" when the truth is he really did. He'd purchased a Spartan-type knife/sword and had it in his carry-on bag. We get to the x-ray machine and my cousin's like "i'm fucked". He puts his bag in and we walk thru the metal detector and while waiting for the bags to pass thru we're looking at the x-ray machine where you can clearly see his big-ass knife/sword .... problem is the guy supposed to be watching the machine was engaged in some fuckin' convo with the woman next to him and wasn't looking at the screen. We pick up our bags and so my cousin's on the plane with a goddam sword.

You gotta love airport security.
