The Supreme Court has overturned the Plan RENOVE verdict that was emitted by the National District Appeals Court's Third Penal Chamber. This is the verdict that dismissed charges against a group of former government officials and an Israeli-American citizen involved in a RD$1.8 billion peso fraud case centered on a government plan to renew the fleet of vehicles used to provide public transportation throughout the country. The Supreme Court Penal Chamber, after overturning the Third Penal Chamber's verdict, sent the case back to the Penal Chamber of the Appeals Court of the province of Santo Domingo. The overturned sentence was issued last 6 February. It, in turn, had dismissed the verdict emitted by magistrate Esther Angelan Casasnovas, who had found ten of the fourteen accused in the case, guilty. The problems with Plan Renove surfaced towards the end of the Mejia Administration after an audit by the Government Accounting Office.
The Supreme Court also ruled that the former government officer in charge of the program, Siquio NG de la Rosa and businessman Johnny Morales, both close aids of former President Hipolito Mejia, be included in the case.
