The National Drug Control Department (DNCD) has arrested 351 "mules" at Dominican airports since the change of government in August 2004, as reported in Listin Diario. Of these, 207 were Dominican citizens. There were also several from Holland (26), the US (18), France (17), Spain (16), Italy (8), and Venezuela (7). According to the DNCD, 196 people were caught at Santo Domingo's Las Americas International Airport, including 126 Dominicans and 74 foreigners.
At the Punta Cana International airport, 62 mules have been arrested (37 DR nationals and 25 foreigners). At the Puerto Plata Airport, 25 Dominicans and 23 foreigners have been arrested for drug smuggling.
At Cibao International (Santiago), authorities have arrested 17 Dominicans and six foreigners. At La Romana airport, three Dominicans and 10 foreigners have been arrested. And at the now-closed Herrera Airport, there were two cases of foreigners attempting to smuggle illegal drugs.
Of the total of cases, 197 were caught with cocaine, 68 with heroin, eight with marijuana and seven with ecstasy.
The authorities confiscated 340,782.8 grams of cocaine at Las Americas, 142,191.6 grams of heroin and 20,136 units of ecstasy. At Punta Cana, the total amount of drugs confiscated was 185,524.4 grams of cocaine, 23,860 heroin, and 29,672 units of ecstasy. At Puerto Plata Airport, 182,913 grams of cocaine were confiscated and 2,130 grams of heroin, plus 259,337 units of ecstasy. At La Romana International, 39,623.2 grams of cocaine were confiscated, and 26,810 grams of heroin.
