[DR1] An experiment in biodiesel underway

The president of the Dominican-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, Leonel Castellanos, tells Hoy that the first experiment for the biodiesel production in the Dominican Republic is under way. The experiment will try and use the seeds from the castor oil plant, which grows very well in Dominican soil and climate. The experiment is taking place in San Juan de la Maguana through a joint investment with Dominican and Brazilian interests. Castellanos also said that the African Oil Palm could also become a source for biodiesel fuel since it has a very high oil content. If successful, biodiesel production could see large extensions of the Northwest and the South under cultivation of these varieties. Castellanos emphasized that the passage of the Incentives for the Development of Renewable Sources of Energy Law, currently in Congress, would spur further investments.
