While life in most areas affected by the recent rains is returning to normal, eight communities in San Cristobal are still cut off.
The Emergency Operations Center (COE) reduced the alert levels from yellow to green for San Cristobal and La Altagracia (Higuey) provinces and removed the yellow alerts for La Vega, Monsignor Nouel (Bonao), Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui), Maria Trinidad Sanchez (Nagua), Monte Plata, Hermanas Mirabal (Salcedo), Duarte (San Francisco de Macoris), Bahoruco, Dajabon, Monte Cristi, San Jose de Ocoa, El Seibo, San Pedro de Macoris, Elias Pina, Samana, Santo Domingo, Santiago and the National District.
According to a report by the National Meteorological Office (Onamet), the forecast for conditions over most of the country continues to improve and skies over the island are clearing.
Nevertheless, Onamet advised people living in areas with steep slopes to remain alert to possible landslides or broken pipes that could lead to slides. People living near rivers, creeks and streams are also advised to be on the lookout for flooding.
The head of the COE, General Juan Manuel Mendez, said that 339 people are still in shelters, although 90% of evacuees have returned to their homes. He said that 62 houses were still flooded, nine houses were severely damaged and three were totally destroyed.
