The Supreme Court of Justice (SJC) has issued an arrest warrant as part of an extradition process for two people accused of plotting to make contact with hired killers for the murder of the New York prosecutor who investigated the case against former Army captain Quirino Ernesto Paulino Castillo.
Diario Libre learned that at the General Prosecutor's request, the High Court issued arrest orders against Edwin Pimentel Tejada and Marcos Abad de la Cruz, which have been implemented. A third person, who is believed to have provided the funding for the operation is also being sought.
The US authorities accuse the men of putting together a conspiracy to contract hitmen. As proof to back up their extradition petition, the US authorities showed videos and played tapes describing the criminal set up.
Pimentel Tejada and Abad de la Cruz are being investigated and the process is being prepared with the aim of sending the case to the Criminal Chamber of the SJC for the decision on extradition. The SJC issued sentence 970-2009 ordering the arrests, accepting the evidence presented by the Prosecutor General.
The two men being sought for extradition were arrested during an operation by the National Police Criminal Intelligence Department and the Justice Department. The name of the New York prosecutor against whom they were plotting was not revealed.
Paulino Castillo was arrested in December 2004 after a cargo of 1,387 kilograms of cocaine en route for New York was seized in his possession. The drug don has since admitted sending more than 30 tons of cocaine to the United States.
Prosecutors have accused 22 people of involvement in that case. Most of them, including Paulino Castillo have made plea bargains with the US authorities. As a result of these agreements, the former military officer's relatives were released from money laundering charges.
