President Leonel Fernandez and Puerto Rican Governor Luis Fortuno have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening bi-lateral economic, trade and pro development programs. Fernandez is in PR participating in the Dominican Business and Investment Exhibition being held concurrently with the 81st Annual Convention of the Puerto Rico Association of Industries.
The agreement also includes stipulations on cooperation in areas such as energy and cultural development. The agreement, the Joint Declaration for the Strategic Alliance between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, seeks to double trade volumes between the DR and its neighbor. The agreement was signed in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico and seeks to make the most of clauses in the DR-CAFTA trade agreement.
Speaking during the ceremony, Fernandez stated that, "the only way to overcome the current crisis is by being creative, imaginative and establishing alliances that permit us to design a development strategy". He said strengthening ties would help to further development strategies. Fernandez also commented that in order for the DR to progress there needed to be an increased use of renewable energy resources.
