[DR1] Half of jobs are in informal sector

A recent World Bank report brings to the open the fact that half of the jobs in the Dominican Republic are in the informal sector, that is in non-registered businesses. The World Bank report indicates that despite employees in the informal sector not enjoying labor benefits such as severance payment, pension and health benefits, most workers feel they are better off than working in the formal sector. The study indicates there are side benefits such as increased independence and flexible working hours that make these jobs more attractive. The study concludes that informal jobs offer more benefits to workers than formal jobs. The World Bank study suggests that more effective mechanisms be put in place to increase the productivity of micro, small and medium sized businesses.
