According to the president of the National Chamber of the Textile Industry (CANAINTEX), many free zone factories run the risk of losing contracts if the Dominican Republic does not prepare for the DR-CAFTA to start without delay. Hoy newspaper carries a comment by Mexican businessman Rafael Zaga Kalach who stated that the treaty has a provision for Mexico-manufactured inputs to enter here and be transformed and later exported duty-free to the United States. There is a five-year spread for this exemption, which gives time for the DR to negotiate an free trade agreement with Mexico. At present, all inputs need to be US or DR- sourced. He explained what is important is to integrate the Western Hemisphere to compete with Asia.
