The Dominican Republic is seeking a seat on the United Nations Security Council. In 2001, the DR sought a seat but was defeated by Mexico, a last-minute candidate. Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso said that the period sought by the DR is not for 2006-2007 but rather 2007-2008 beginning in September. Thus, the intentions of the Dominican government do not interfere with those of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez who maintains cooperation relations in terms of oil and energy with the DR. Venezuela is a candidate this year and is being challenged by Guatemala. The United States supports Guatemala.
