It may require signing up for a yearly plan. The phone may be more money with out the plan.

A pre-paid will cost you more than 2.000 pesos. Think more like 5.000 pesos.....
I just bring my own phone and change my sim chip for a dominican one I buy at the Orange shop for 350 pesos.
Ofcourse you need to own a gsm phone for that, but that's all we have here in Holland, so no problem there.....

It may cost even less. Some used or(and) old phone models. My friend bold the phone about 1500 peso in november (with orange pre-paid plan)

Does the phone have to be unlocked?

Was told that phone could be unlocked for a price. Like everything else in the DR. Money talks.

My phone isn't locked, so I don't have that problem.
Plus a lot can be unlocked by looking up stuff on the internet
