Just got back. The chica prices are now 1500 and 3000 for ST and TLN.

I still find it interesting (and somewhat confusing) that BB's sets prices, if as I have been told on this board they don't get a cut. From what I understand they charge the chicas a fee for being there, but don't get a cut of the ST or LT deal. Why not just have the girls there and let them set their own prices? And on occasion in the past when an industrious chica saw an obvious sucker and asked for more, she got reprimanded and or kicked out.

Just like it was in June 2004 except back them the peso was hovering around 50 to 1.

Barba Negra is often the introduction to the DR for newbies (as it was for me). I think the idea is for it to get the reputation on the whoreboards and by word of mouth that naïve beginners won't get scammed. Yes, they pay a little more than elsewhere but they won't get totally ripped off. So fixed prices protect those incapable of negotiating the "right" price (which they wouldn't always know anyway). Same principle as Passions.

They must have just changed their prices because last month they were still at 1300 and 2500

I understand the protection idea, but Passions gets a cut from every transaction.

I understand why Passions gets a cut if the girl is using the facilities to give a "massage" etc. Set prices makes sense in that case. Bar fines at Passions I understand the girl works a shift so she is leaving "early" from work. Other places I am not so sure if that logic would hold true or not.

If the prices have gone up at BB's I know the girls will be a pleased. There has not been an increase in a long time. BB's is great for newbies, people that want to budget in advance, or don't want to discuss the rates etc. I have fallen into all three of those areas at one time or another.

I have been to the DR enough times to have enough emails and working numbers to set up what I want in advance. The girls know what I want and what they can expect to rec. etc. My next trip is in July. I have 2-3 nights at FOD with no "dates" set up. I want to see what it is like for the guy right off the plane that knows nothing. That said I do have a plan A, B and C in the event things don't work out. I have also decided to stay on a Thurs - Sat as that is the peak time. It will allow me to compare FOD to BB's.

Sorry guys, just saw 2 different posts with 2 sets of prices. So, just want to know which is it at BB's, 1500 and 2500 or 1500 and 3000? I just have to calculate my mileage at BB's as LP is on the hitlist:lol:

so right now since the peso is 37 per dollar at caribe tours 5 minutes down the street from BB's which is where you should go directly in the cab from the airport before reaching bb's or if you are driving it is on the corner of Calle Jose Eugenio Kunhardt and the Main road ( I forgot the actual street name, any cabbie or local knows where it is. ) other wise BB's rips you off in the exchange price. If you go to Caribe Tours, after the exchange, the price of 1500 pesos at 37 for the US dollar exchange rate is only 40-.5 dollars, whereas when the rate was 33 and it was 1300 it was $39.3. AS for TLN 2500 when the rate was 33 was about $75 and now at 3000 it is $81. Everyone knows the dollar is stronger and that is why they raised the rates, even regular Sosua girls have upped the rates. $1 to $5 is not gonna kill us. Still less than half of what it cost in 1st world more developed places.
one thing good about bb's is immediate easy access to point and click. and the rates keep you from getting screwed by street rats, but less choice.

on that note, pete's LP upped the prices to give the girls a raise, and at the same time they actually hold more of the girls money to pay them later like a savings account in house, I supposed pete invests the money, a good idea, because otherwise the girls spend it daily on shit they do not need and do not know how to save. Many keep the same old crappy apartments etc, instead of moving up a little in the world and getting a nicer apt and a computer, and a/c. etc. The good ones make $300 a day or more. 6 days a week is $1,800 a week, x 4 = $7,200 a month. no taxes. That is a lot more than most of us get to keep after taxes are figured in. but it goes to clothes, shoes, poor family in the country, moms, grandmas, kids, etc. eating out at restaurants, beer, etc. but many of the infamous favorites left because the hold on a good amount of money is mandatory. many of them frequent the beach thurs, fri, sat, sun. saw at least 15 of the old ones.

They changed. I was there as of 4 days ago. The new prices are printed on the "Companion Information" sheet that you receive upon check-in. And Cynthia at the front desk made it a point to inform me of the change upon arrival.

The quote of yourmomma999 is referring to LP, La Passion, which is in Sosua not Costambar. ;)

Cool, thanks fellas for the info. Is it true that you would get a better exchange rate at the banks at the POP airport over the caribe tour place?

I don't think that is the case. I think the exchange rate isn't as good because the convenience of being able to change money there. I believe I used one of them in 2006 on my way home to change pesos back into US Dollars, and the rate sucked!

You NEVER EVER CHANGE MONEY in an Airport to get the best rates. If you are leaving a Country you never intend to return to or not soon anyway then get whatever you can anywhere you can but otherwise go to banks, atm's or change booths on the streets.

I like to bring Travelers Checks and cash them at the Banco Popular. You need a Passport and they give the best rates. I hate to carry lots of cash. I also bring about 1500 to 3000 pesos back with me so that when I return I have a little local money. BB's will cash Travelers Checks (as much as you want) but the exchange rate is less than the Bank.

I like to bring Travelers Checks.
Just a comment and not a criticism as I know you are a very experienced and organised guy:
In three and a half years of visiting the DR, talking to dozens of guys, and reading hundreds of posts about travel money, etc., you are the first person I have ever heard of using travelers checks. I thought they had gone the way of CD singles and telexes.

But as I said, I know if you use them you have a good reason.

Thanks fellas. I will wait then to exchange the money at some joint there instead of the airport. I was going to do it at POP when I get in. Thanks for watching out and all the info for a rookie going in for the 1st time this Thursday:biggrin:

I always exchange at the bank in the airport as you exit customs where all the cabbies are it is to your left as you are leaving. The exchange rate was always only a few cents difference against posted rates

Most of the exchange houses I deal with will give a better exchange rate for Traveler's checks than they will for cash. Not so with personal checks.

I get about a point less for personal checks.

Weyland you are right I have only seen a couple of other people with Travelers Checks. BB's, Casinos and Banks are about the only places I can really use them. I use ATM machines in the Bank lobbys often. I had a bad experience carrying a lot of cash about 4 years ago and almost lost 3,000 us.
