Three ships of the Japanese Navy - Kashima, Amaguiri and Yamaguiri -- are docked at the Don Diego terminal of the Santo Domingo Port. Rear Admiral Takanobu Sasaki, commander of the fleet, said that some 800 Japanese sailors and officers are on board, including 180 officers that will soon graduate. The ship that arrived yesterday will be in port for three days before leaving for Boston and Baltimore, USA. Rear Admiral Sasaki explained, as reported in El Caribe, that the visit seeks to expand the international horizon of the crew and officers and strengthen friendship ties with the countries they visit.

The ships can be visited by the general public.

This weekend, several tall ships here as part of the Americas Sail 2006 event will also be open to the public in the Santo Domingo Port Area. For more events, see http://www.dr1.com/calendar
