Today is the 47th anniversary of the attempt to overthrow dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina. The expedition left Cuba and was three pronged. The first group landed at the airport in Constanza on 14 June, and later another landed by sea at Maimon and the third landed at Estero Hondo, on the northwestern coast. The 60 men that landed in Constanza were dressed to look like Dominican Air Force members, and they took to the hills to begin a guerilla war against the dictator. They were led by Enrique Jimenez Moya who had denounced on several occasions brutalities committed by Trujillo during the 29 years he had been in power. Five days after the initial landing in Constanza, 144 more men of the expedition landed on the beaches of Maimon and Estero Hondo. Within a short period of time all of the guerilla forces had been either killed or captured. While the invasion itself was a failure, it did spark a political movement of resistance as well as international feelings that eventually led to the isolation and destruction of the dictatorship.
