Santo Domingo will host the IXth Latin American Botany Congress. The event is hosted by Milciades Mejia, director of the Santo Domingo Botanical Gardens. The congress opens on Sunday, 18 June at the Dominican Fiesta and some 1,400 delegates have registered coming from 44 Latin American and Caribbean countries. Scientists, university professors, researchers and biologists will discuss the flora of Latin America and the Caribbean. On the agenda are talks on conservation, biodiversity, environmental policies, molecular biology, use of medicinal plants, distribution of plants, etnobotanics and taxonomy, and the use of multimedia and the Internet in the teaching of botany in Latin America, among other topics. The congress seeks to spread knowledge on flora that is native to Latin America and foster the integration of the botanical community for the development of actions towards conservation and sustainable management of the region's flora.
