The proposed autonomy for the Customs Office (DGA) and the Tax Department (DGII) was approved yesterday by the Dominican Senate after two readings of the proposed legislation. The approval was unanimous. The bills had been approved in the Chamber of Deputies in April. The bills were passed in a session where innumerable pensions and sales contracts were approved by the legislators, most of whom will be leaving their posts in August.

The Senate passed the bills that grant judicial, budgetary, administrative and technical autonomy to Customs Department (DGA) and Tax Department (DGII). The autonomy of these two state departments was one of the requirements made by the United States for implementing the DR-CAFTA accord. As a result of the congressional approval the two state dependencies will be able to operate, hopefully it is said, without interference from politicians and lobby groups.
