A new book about the life of former Dominican president Antonio Guzman by Jose Baez Guerrero is providing new insight into claims that the White House influenced the 1978 presidential elections that brought Guzman to power.
According to Baez's book, which chronicles the life and death of the former president, then president Joaquin Balaguer received a call from the White House instructing him to continue the counting of electoral votes.
Once resumed it was determined that Guzman had beaten Balaguer. Balaguer went on to peacefully leave office. Baez cites declassified US documents.
