"Cedulas", the national identity and voter registration cards, that were due to be renewed before 31 July, have been granted an extension until 31 December 2009. The period of validity has been extended several times in the past.
This measure frees the Central Electoral Board (JCE) from having to renew hundreds of thousands of these cards during the preparation process for next year's congressional and municipal elections.
The measure was announced during the latest meeting of the full board.

The JCE president said that there is not enough time for the new "cedula" process to be undertaken and he indicated that the expiration date should be extended.
