An Australian company will recycle the trailings from gold and silver ores from the Pueblo Viejo mine in Cotui between 1992 and 1999. The company, using new techniques, hopes to recover metals that were not removed from the ore. This is a US$72 million project.
On its website, EnviroGold Ltd says that the company and some of its partners signed an agreement to exploit the used ores from the gold mining operation with the Dominican government in 2004.
The project is called "The Las Lagunas Gold Trailings Project", and after nearly two years of failed attempts the company expects to have positive results later this year.
The project involves processing the remnants of the old mine, starting in October 2009, and by January 2011 they expect to have a sizable amount of gold for a market expected to reach US$900 per ounce. The production costs for the recovered gold and silver was put at US$330 per ounce.
According to Hoy newspaper, the company says that the Dominican government will receive about US$80,000,000 from the deal.
The new Albion Process will be used to process more than 800,000 tons of material per year, and extract 87,000 ounces of gold and 510,000 ounces of silver.
This will be the first commercial use of the process in the world. The Albion Process was developed by Xtrata Technology.
