The results of the recent Gallup-Hoy poll that found that 84.8% of citizens rejects the cement factory in Los Haitises is a reflection of public empowerment on environmental issues, comments lawyer Humberto Frias, coordinator of the legal campaign against the installation of the cement plant and a member of the Dominican Academy of Sciences.
This is especially true of the nation's youth, he adds. He comments that the poll also reveals a marked distrust of the authorities.
Frias said that these non-traditional groups have represented a "mea culpa" for the environmental and NGO groups that receive generous funding but have kept a low profile during the debate on the cement factory.
Frias said that such a decisive rejection by the population points to the failure of the business venture. He called upon the Dominican Mining Consortium to review the project because the "stubbornness" to impose the site would affect their economic activities.
Frias also said that the survey showed the failure of the authorities' handling of the project as well as revealing a lack of confidence in the authorities. He comments that the people seem to think that a large part of the problems of environmental degradation that they experience is due to the authorities violating regulations to the prejudice of the population.
He concluded: "This survey reflects a new way of thinking and a new generation that we can be proud of."
