The Dominican authorities are continuing their search of the beaches along the country's north and northeast coastline for a group of would-be migrants that left for Puerto Rico on 11 July.
The Dominican Navy and members of the Civil Defense are concentrating their search in the area of Nagua on the northeast coast and Gaspar Hernandez on the north coast.
Despite the fact that Navy sources say there were 14 travelers, other sources are mentioning the possibility that 26 people were involved in the illegal trip.
Maria Gomez, who baled out of the trip a few minutes after the boat left for Puerto Rico, told reporters that the boat left from Gaspar Hernandez and not Nagua as some reports said. She added that when the boat started to take on water shortly after leaving, she and a friend decided to jump into the sea and swim to the shore. She said that some other people on board wanted to do the same thing but both captains stopped them.
According to local media sources, some of the occupants of the boat have called relatives saying that they are stranded on a small island near Puerto Rico without fuel or food.
Hato Mayor governor Jose Alberto Vasquez said that two US coast guard vessels are helping with the search.
Bad weather caused by the tropical wave that affected the area has forced the Navy to abandon the search.
