Protests over the constant blackouts and the precarious water supply were renewed yesterday in Luperon, Puerto Plata and in the municipal district of Hatillo Palma, Montecristi. In Hatillo Palma, the person in charge of the local board, Carmen Yocelin Espinal, was detained for several hours accused of inciting the demonstrations.
The cities of Moca and La Vega saw demonstrators burning old tires and scattering garbage and rubbish to hinder traffic. There the cry was also for better electric service.
In Luperon, Puerto Plata, the residents of the La Escalereta section say that it has been one month since local water lines have supplied water. The protests in Hatillo Palma were fueled by the fact that for a month, now, they have been receiving just three hours of electricity per day.
According to the El Caribe, police agents arrested Espinal in her home at 6am yesterday, together with two other persons under the allegation that she was paying local ruffians to protest. Espinal said that her detention and questioning was politically based since she was the PRD candidate for mayor in the 2010 elections in Hatillo Palma.
In Burende, La Vega, there were protests, also, for the lack of reliable electricity service.
