For several years now, business sector representatives have been encouraging the government to sign an agreement with the International Monetary Fund to control spending and corruption. Minister of Economy, Planning and Development Temistocles Montas announced that the agreement with the IMF would be for a total of US$1.23 billion for the remainder of the year. Montas said that both parties are working on a letter of intent, and talks could start as early as next Wednesday.
Montas commented that any new agreement with the IMF would not mean a new fiscal reform, or tax increase.
