The Diamond Mall, located near the intersection of Santo Domingo's Avenida de los Proceres, John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln, exploded yesterday morning at 7 o'clock. Only five people were injured, with one person, thought to have been at the very center of the blast, dying after suffering 90% second and third degree burns. The local fire marshals said that the blast was caused by a serious gas leak at a pizza parlor. Apparently, the leak had continued all night, and when the manager of the Soluciones Alimenticias shop tried to light his ovens the whole building erupted in an explosion that was felt up to half a mile away. Four passers-by were injured by flying glass fragments and the baker, Alcibiades Herrera was killed. Oscar Guillermo Garcia, the fire chief on the scene, told Listin Diario reporters that the explosion was caused by a gas leak in the buildings internal propane supply system. According to reports in El Caribe, the entire mall is unfit for use and should be reconstructed before readmitting the public. The destruction literally wiped out all the small shops on the second floor and caused structural damage to the entire building. Glass was shattered throughout the area.
