[DR1] Senate sends Code changes to committee

The Dominican Senate has sent a series of proposed modifications to the Penal Code to a committee for study. The suggested changes to the much-debated new Penal Code revolve around obligatory remand to preventive custody for those accused of murder, robbery and criminal association in cases where the accused have been previously submitted to court for similar acts. The author of the new proposals is PLD Senator for Santo Domingo, Jose Tomas Perez. The proposal also includes obligatory preventative custody for those accused of kidnapping, rape, infanticide, and parricide (the killing of a parent). This proposal joins another that is proposing the creation of life sentences for certain heinous offenses. A report by the committees is expected next Tuesday.
