The government has contracted construction of a US$225 million hydroelectric dam. President Fernandez was present for the symbolic first blast of the Palomino Dam that will feed on waters from the Yaque del Sur and Blanco rivers in the Province of San Juan de la Maguana. For the construction, the government has taken on a loan from the BNP Paribas bank of France and the Brazilian export development bank, Bandes. The dam construction will take 48 months, as reported in El Caribe. The construction has been entrusted to the Brazilian firm of Norberto Odebrecht, and no tender was carried out for the contracting of the dam.
