Because of a US$145,000 debt pending from the September hosting of the Pre World Pan American Basketball Championship in Santo Domingo, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) have banned the Dominican Republic from competing in the Central American and Caribbean Games to be held in Cartagena, Colombia in July. Frank Herasme, of the Dominican Basketball Federation said that the DR had not met a commitment to make a US$50,000 payment on the debt by 3 June. Alberto Garcia, secretary general of FIBA Americas, said that due to the debt, Dominican basketball teams are banned from competing in international events this year. The DR basketball team would have been the defending champion at the Central American and Caribbean Games basketball event.
