Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas is recommending people to drink more water or other non-alcohol fluids and eat fruits and vegetables that are lighter and for their higher content of water, fiber, vitamins and other nutrients because of the heat wave affecting the country. On the contrary, foods (like proteins) that increase metabolic heat production also increase water loss. Individuals are recommended to drink plenty of fluids even if one doesn't feel thirsty and to avoid alcoholic beverages. He also recommends people to dress for summer and wear lightweight and light-colored clothing that reflects heat and sunlight and helps the body maintain normal temperatures. Staying out of the blazing sun is recommended because sunburn makes the job of heat dissipation that much more difficult.


Bautista Rojas made his comments when attending the opening of a First Nutri-Expo Summer 2006 Fair.
