Fire Department Chief General Oscar Guillermo Garcia has attributed Tuesday morning's gas explosion at the Diamond Mall to carelessness. He stated that although the mall had complied with all the requirements for the installation of piping for gas from two 500-gallon tanks outside, it is evident that someone had made a careless mistake by using the gas and leaving it open, according to a report in Listin Diario. According to Garcia, a large number of malls and shopping centers in Santo Domingo do not have adequate evacuation signage for emergencies nor do they have the required number of extinguishers or other emergency systems that could help save lives.
Diario Libre also published a report alerting condominium owners to look into the security of their internal propane gas installations.
Celso Marranzini, spokesman for storeowners, said that the mall would reopen "better than before" in the short term.
