The PRD's highest executive committee - the Presidium - has agreed to hold a convention on November 12 to elect its Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates for the 16 May 2008 elections. Listin Diario reports that the aspiring pre-candidates are former Public Works Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado, former party president Emmanuel Esquea Guerrero; former Attorney General Virgilio Bello Rosa, and that there is also a group promoting the possible participation of former President Hipolito Mejia in the convention. The party ratified the present board of the PRD - Ramon Alburquerque, president and Orlando Jorge Mera, secretary general -- despite internal calls of Esquea, Bello Rosa and former Vice President Milagros Ortiz Bosch for replacing the board after the dismal showing in the 2006 congressional and municipal election. The Presidium's decision must now be ratified by the Political Commission, which meets on 28 June.
