President Leonel Fernandez has ordered an investigation following allegations by lawyer Marino Vinicio "Vincho" Castillo, who heads the National Ethics Commission. Castillo is claiming that the cost of the Monte Grande dam was overvalued by more than US$29 million. It was reported in yesterday's news that the Brazilian company Andrade Gutierrez had placed a price tag of US$32 million, while other experts put the estimate at about US$3.5 million. Although it has yet to provide an explanation, the company says it would respond to the allegations soon. In explaining his comments about the cost of the dam, Castillo took what could be seen as a shot at the President. He is quoted in Hoy as saying, "he is too benign, he has an unprecedented level of tolerance, he has no reaction, he doesn't take any action, which can be very dangerous". The investigation into the allegations will be led by the Comptroller General's Office, directed by Simon Lizardo. Hector Rodriguez Pimentel, former director of the Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI), the government body in charge of the dam construction, refused to talk about the allegations and their implications.
