The PLD has officially launched its internal electoral campaign. The party's Electoral Commission rejected 73 initial candidacies, including San Pedro de Macoris senator Alejandro Williams. Readers may recall that Williams was involved in a scandal earlier this year, after it was revealed that the Senator hardly ever attended Congressional meetings. Instead, Williams was a practicing dentist in New York State while still collecting his Senatorial paycheck. The Williams saga gained even more traction when he was accused of sending a pair of goons to harass journalists covering the story. Williams denied the allegations and even met with the Congressional ethics committee, but no resolution or sanction was ever issued against him. Speaking on behalf of the Committee, Ligia Amada Melo said that not everyone who had been elected to a political position has the right to be a member of the PLD. In his defense, Williams, speaking though his spokesperson, said he has the right to be a PLD member and run his campaign.
