There has been a spike in the number of cases of dengue fever reported in the DR. However, officials still maintain that an increase in new cases is common for this time of year. There have been 4,800 cases recorded in 2009, with 39 deaths as a direct result of dengue fever. Listin Diario reports that children are amongst those most affected by this recent wave of dengue and schools have been reminding parents not to send children to school if they are unwell.
