well guys here is another boring trip report...

I started looking for an in-expensive flight to a good adult entertainment city

every city I preferred was over $500..some even as high as $800..

the only place I could find for around $300 was Puerta Plata DR...

I had never been to the north coast of DR and never have had a great desire to go there

A friend of mine who lives in north florida also wanted to get away for a few days. I will call him Mario..

I have been to Santo Domingo more times than I care to admitt.and after a few trips I agree with a few other travelers..

the DR loses its "CHARM" after awhile..

I figured 3 nights would be ok before the "charm" wore off

Although I had never been to Sosua, the discussion boards pretty much answered any questions I had about the place..

I booked a flight leaving miami tuesday returning friday from Puerta Plata..

my freind Mario booked us 2 rooms for 3 nights at the seabreeze hotel in Sosua..$40 per night

Marios plans were to leave on the same flight as me but he was going to stay 4 nights longer than me..

he said 3 nights were not enough for him and he said he may just go to Caberete and stay the remaining 4 nights..


the flight leaves at 110pm...we arrived at Mia around 1115am and swiped our passports in the electronic check in..

wah la...boarding passes

mario went ahaead of me through security check because I wanted to go outside and have a smoke before I boarded..

also I wanted to buy a couple of cartons of cigarretes at duty free...smokes are now 7 bucks a pack in miami

I plan to bring back as many as possible..

the closet had a few drawers built in with a cheesy looking safe screwed to the top drawer..a desk and a lamp would have really made the room decent..but for 40 bucks per night it would be fine for 3 nights...

the main thing is they were CLEAN and the shower had hot water...

around 530 we are unpacked and ready to go out for a walk and check out Sosua..

it had began to rain on the cabride to the hotel and was letting up so we began our walk in a light drizzle..

right away we were hustled by the streetwalkers to change money..we passed and found a small place called Ortize money exchange..the rates were 35 pesos to 1 dollar..we both exchanged 300 us dollars

we walked for about an hour ..it was hard not to notice how dirty the little town is, especially in the rain,

the water from the rain running down the curb looked like pure oil instead of rainwater...and the smoke from all the pesky moped riders was very thick .. fresh ocean breezes are nothing but a memory here is my guess

I get up around 9am..

another thing I noticed in Sosua..there are tons of real estate agencies..and I saw plenty of places for sale

alotta business and many condos had for sale signs hanging on them

at the same time I saw plenty of falling down buildings...right next to new buildings being built


my guess is before they will allow a foregnier to re-sell a place and bail out or make a profit... the local real estate gurus will just build a new place to sell to a new buyer and let the foregniers place sit forever and rot to the ground..

I would NEVER invest in real estate there..my guess is the guys that were driving the hummers and porshces around Sosua are thanking the foregniers for investing in real estate

anyway..


around noon we take a 15 dollar 15 minute cab ride to Caberet...

the road was good on the way there..we passd by a HUGE horse farm that was very impressive looking

there was even a jumping ring set up..this place was HUGE and well kept..there must have been a 100 horses in the pasture

you would never know it from being in Sosua but there are some very WEALTHY people in the DR

I do some business out west and one thing I know for sure is people with horses have money

like one guy told me.."all a horse does is eat!!" owning a horse is like owning a boat

as long as you own it, you never stop spending money on it


we have the cab drop us off right in the middle of caberete..it seems a little bigger than Sosua and the place is loaded with wind/kite surfers..caberete is totaly different than Sosua..we walked around a few minutes and walked to the beach

10 minutes later we rented a umbrella and I was in the water...it was nice..the water was much cooler than Sosua

we stayed on the beach about an hour and a half and were not one time asked to buy something or if we needed change

it was fun watching the wind and kite surfers..the yound kids were the best..they could really go fast on the wind surfboards and the small kitesufers could really fly

around 330 I am hungry as hell...we walked a little and read a few menus and stopped at a place that had an avocado and crab salad as the special..it sounded good and was...

Mario had been exchanging emails with a few hotels in caberete because his original plans were to stay 4 more nights..

we decided to walk and check out the hotel deals..one place was hi end but he was going to get a rate using his brothers membership benefits..another place was really nice but had no AC..this would be ok in the winter but in the middle of july an AC is a must in the DR


now that he has found steady pussy and a nice town he did seem to regret making the change in his flight plans!!

now it is getting close to 5pm and I am hot and tired and was ready for a siesta..

we hop another 15 dollar cab back to Sosua and I head to my room and tell Mario I would be ready for dinner around 9

the flight back to miami left an hour late so hanging at the airport an extra hour sucked

sailed through customs in miami and dropped Mario off at my other apartment and I was home about an hour after touchdown

Wrong! Cabarete is actually part of Sosúa municipality, and population figures are hard to come by, but I would guess the "core" part of Sosúa (El Batey and Los Charamicos) is at least double the size of Cabarete in both area and population (around 20,000 against 10,000?).
