2.1 million vaccinated for tetanus

The Ministry of Public Health reports that 2.1 million persons have been vaccinated for tetanus and whooping cough, a milestone figure in the history of the inoculation program. Public Health Minister Dr. Bautista Rojas Gomez says the program is the key factor in the more than 50% drop in deaths from tetanus in the DR during 2009 compared to 2008. In 2008, 54 persons died from tetanus nationwide. He said that vaccination efforts are targeted at rural areas and construction workers. The goal is that there not be a single death from tetanus.
