The Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) has returned a total of 783 vehicles to their owners after receiving payment of the corresponding fines, late fees and sticker price for the renewal of the tax on using the nation's roads. They also hauled in 3,185 vehicles for not having the marbete sticker showing that the tax had been paid to the Department of Taxes (DGII).
The operation to seize vehicles without stickers began on 18 November, after the three-month period for the sticker acquisition expired.
Hundreds of thousands of drivers who had been counting on an extension of the process were surprised by the aggressive behavior of the AMET officers in their "Smoky the Bear" hats. Dozens of cars were hauled away every minute, with more than a thousand in Santo Domingo alone and more than 500 in Santiago. The resulting traffic tie-ups were also noteworthy.
Traffic Law #241 sets out that: "No vehicle can travel on the public roads without being duly authorized for this by the DGII."
According to El Nuevo Diario, the DGII has gone as far as to set up an office at the old dog track to facilitate the dispatch of new stickers for people whose vehicles have been towed away.
Diario Libre reported that 20% of one million vehicle owners still needed to obtain their stickers, and that in Santo Domingo province some people were scammed after trusting others to get the document for them by paying less.
