As a result of last week's torrential rains in Santiago, two thousand families have been displaced and 800 of them have lost everything. Over the weekend, the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) maintained its flood alert for most of the northeast of the Dominican Republic. The Meteorological Department has been predicting a continuation of heavy rainfall due to a tropical wave coming in from Puerto Rico. El Caribe reports an outbreak of mosquitoes, skin infections, respiratory problems and fevers as a result of these rains. The EOC reports that 10 houses were swept away in the Hoyo de Julia and another 17 are in serious danger of collapsing on 8th Street in Gurabo. Of the 2,000 houses affected, 161 are still experiencing problems in the Hoyo de Bartolo area as well as another 90 in Hoyo de Pachula. These barrios are located in the watersheds in and around Santiago. The Public Health office in Santiago is monitoring the affected areas to watch for possible outbreaks of dengue or other serious illnesses.
