A colonel in the Santo Domingo Fire Department was arrested as he and nine others claiming to be members of the department requested visas that would allow them to attend a training course in Texas. Colonel Juan Reyes Santana was arrested by the police in cooperation with personnel from the United States Consulate Fraud Prevention Unit. After interrogating a number of the supposed firemen, the anti-fraud unit found that the colonel had received US$3,000 from each of them in return for the documentation needed to obtain the required visa. The police told reporters that the case is being investigated by the Department of Human Trafficking.
Most of the men arrested in this case come from La Caleta, near Boca Chica. However, the latest reports from Listin Diario say that nobody in La Caleta knows of Juan Reyes Santana. Santana said he was the colonel of the La Caleta Fire Department, but, according to the newspaper, the only reference to a fire department in La Caleta is a sign in a vacant lot announcing the construction of Boca Chica Station No. 2. At the Boca Chica fire station, nobody admitted to knowing Reyes Santana.
