The head of mission of the Vatican in the Dominican Republic, Timothy Broglio urged that the government remove from the National Police criminals, corrupt and inefficient members. He also said that after the purge officers be given appropriate training, equipment and decent wages. He expressed his concern regarding the increase in crime in the country, as reported in Hoy. Broglio alerted that since tourism is the pillar on which the DR economy stands, priority needs to be given to local tranquility and safety.
