The recent home invasion that took place in a Santo Domingo suburb, as well as other violent incidents have led many people to look for ways to provide for their own defense. According to El Caribe, one such example is seen in Santiago where people who usually exercise around the Monument in the mornings and evenings can be seen carrying Billy clubs, pipes, and baseball bats. Local gun dealers are reporting an increase in sales of pepper spray and handguns. Businessmen are said to be opting for the use of armed guards to protect their establishments.
