The National Drug Control Department seized 130 bricks of a substance suspected to be cocaine on Saturday. The alleged drugs were hidden in sacks of yautia (taro or manioc) and sweet potato that were to be exported to Puerto Rico on the ferry later in the day. The container was seized at the Duarte Highway Km25 tollbooth. The DNCD said that the crops had been packed by the Feliz Sabatino Rodriguez exporting company from San Juan de la Maguana and were consigned to Taino's Produce, Inc. of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. DNCD chief Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo was present when the drug was confiscated. DNCD spokesman Roberto Lebron told reporters that the bricks had been coated with mayonnaise, mustard and coffee in an attempt to mask the smell and throw off the authorities.
